BONTOC is a second class municipality and the capital of Mountain Province, Philippines.  It is the historical capital of the entire Cordillera region since the inception of governance in the Cordillera.  It is also home to the Bontoc Tribe, a feared war-like group of indigenous people who actively indulged in tribal wars with its neighbors up until the 1930’s.

MOUNT MAKILING, or MOUNT MAQUILING
PHILIPPINES

MOUNT MAKILING, or MOUNT MAQUILING, is a dormant volcano in Laguna province, Provinces.  The mountain rises to an elevation of 3,580 ft above mean sea level and is the highest features of the Laguna Volcanic Field.  A popular hiking destination, Mount Makiling is a state-owned forest reserve administered by the University of the Philippines, Los Banos.  Now known as Mount Makiling Forest Reserve, it was declared an ASEAN Heritages Park in 2013.  The volcano has no recorded historic eruption but volcanism is still evident through geothermal features like mud spring and hot springs.  Legends surrounding the mountain relates to Maria Makiling, which is said to be the ‘guardian’ of the mountain.  The contour of the mountain is said to be that of her in a reclining position.

The Philippine Tarsier (Carlito syrichta), known locally as MAWMAG in Cebuano/Visayan and MAMAG in Luzon, is a species of tarsier endemic to the Philippines.  It is a member of the approximately 45 million year old family Tarsiidae, whose name is derived from its elongated “tarsus” or ankle bone.  It was introduced to Western biologists during the 18th century.  Philippine Tarsier are found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly on the island of Bohol, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao

MOUNT SAMAT

MOUNT SAMAT is a historic mountain in the town of Pilar, Province of Bataan, Philippines, and is a parasitic cone of Mount Mariveles with no record of historical eruption.  The summit of Mount Samat is 9.2 km NNE of the Mariveles caldera.  Mount Samat itself has a 1,800 ft wide crater that opens to the northeast.  The Mount Samat ross is situated near the edge of the crater rim, and located near its summit is the Mount Samat National Shrine, a national shrine dedicated to the heroic struggle and sacrifices of 78,000 Filipino and American soldiers who fought against the Imperial Japanese Army and died in the historic World War II in 1942.

MOUNT MAYON

Mayon Volcano also known as MOUNT MAYON, is an active volcano in the province of Albay, on the island of Luzon in the Philippines.  It is a classic stratovolcano type of volcano capped by a small central summit crater.  Renowned as the “perfect cone” because of its almost symmetric conical shape, it was declared a national park and a protected landscape on July 20, 1938, the first in the country.  It was reclassified a Natural Park and renamed Mayon Volcano Natural Park in the year 2000.  It is the main landmark of Albay Province, rising 8,077 ft from the shores of the Gulf of Albay about 10 km away.  Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines having erupted over 48 times in the past 400 years.

MOUNT APO
PHILIPPINES

MOUNT APO is a large solfataric, potentially- active stratovolcano in the island of Mindanao, Philippines.  With an altitude of 10,322 ft. above sea level, it is the highest mountain in the country located between the provinces of Davao  and Cotabato City.  On May 9, 1936, Mount Apo was declared a national park by President Manuel L. Quezon.  A note on the etymologies: Mount Apo is said to be named after noble man named Apong, who got killed while mediating the battle between two suitors of his daughter Saribu.  Another proposed origin of the name is from the word Apo itself, which is Filipino tongues means  “master”  or “grandfather”.

Heroes’ Cemetery, also officially known as LIBINGAN NG MGA BAYANI in Tagalog, is a national cemetery within Fort Bonifacio (formerly the American Fort William McKinley, in Western Bicutan, Taguig City, Metro Manila, Philippines.  It was established as a fitting resting place for Filipino military personnel from privates to generals, as well as heroes and martyrs.  It was first established on May 1947 as the Republic Memorial Cemetery.  It was then renamed to its current name on October 27, 1954 by President Ramon Magsaysay.
