The Yungas, is a stretch of forest along the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains from Peru, Bolivia and northern Argentina. It is a transitional zone between the Andean highlands and the eastern forests.

This was the scene of the violent eruption of 1886, which resulted in the destruction of the village of Te Wairoa and the Pink and White Terraces.  Now a dormant volcano, Mt. Tarawera’s line of craters form a 6km gash along its ridge.
Mount Tarawera, lies in Southeast of Rotorua, a volcanic mountain with an important role in local history of New Zealand and Rotorua region.
In the 1800s, Tarawera region is New Zealand’s centre of tourism.  A tourist attraction and world famous Pink and White Silica Terraces, was quickly becoming known as the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.  On 10th June 1886, a massive eruption were destroyed the Terraces and killed people and devastated much of the surrounding landscape.
Violent explosions excavated huge craters, one of which is now filled by Lake Rotomahana.
The volcano’s component domes include Ruawahia Dome (the highest at 1,111 metres), Tarawera Dome and Wahanga Dome.
